In 1999, the Kentucky Science and Technology Strategy set the goal of "creating an innovation-driven entrepreneurial economy that would make Kentucky a leader in the development of knowledge and its applications to people, firms, and products." As a part of the local ownership of this Strategy by the Central Kentucky business community, the Lexington Professional Linux Users Group formed to implement this vision by utilizing the strengths of Linux and Open Source Software technology, as well as the strengths of the community that surrounds this technology.

Born out of a vision to extend the traditional role and character of User Groups to include a professional posture by creating an environment that fosters a business model where the traditional exchange of information can lead to profitable relationships the Lexington Professional Linux Users Group offers a unique solution to a complicated set of issues.

The current situation in Kentucky is a poignant example of the common circumstances that confront many local marketplaces through the United States. We are faced with an "insufficient technological infrastructure, an inadequately prepared knowledge workforce, a failure within the community to maximize our intellectual capital resources in concert with industry, and a manufacturing base not taking advantage of technology for competitiveness." The first directive Lexington Professional Linux Users Group undertook was to create an environment where the particular resources of Open Source technology and community could be discussed and related to the existing needs of our marketplace.

The LPLUG has been instrumental in providing:
  • A solid business network with the impetus of providing well-managed real-life timely knowledge
  • A resource of qualified referrals for our consultants and the business community
  • Targeted educational and learning experiences, access to local and extra-local industry leaders, business personalities and business case studies
  • Peer-mentoring opportunities.

As a professional users group we are driven to advocate and exercise "Best Practices" and "Best of Breed" criteria in our particular situations to optimize our opportunity for success. While increased economic activity is an intrinsic focus of our model, we would be short sighted and remiss in our responsibilities if we did not also join the work that is already happening in our state and local government and educational systems.

We are aware of the responsibility that this carries within the greater Central Kentucky business community. We have also chosen to be a Linux Users Group to overcome the misinformation in the marketplace that keeps Linux in specific and Open Source Software in general from being a part of the "Best Practices" / "Best of Breed conversation. The Lexington Professional Linux Users Group is committed to communicating the potential that this model offers other communities to leverage the strengths of Linux and Open Source Software technologies in their business communities as well as remaining an active part of our local business community.
